Timing Equipment:

PERFECT TIMING uses a variety of equipment to do that actual timing at the finish line. We do not use specialized timing devices such as the Time Machine or the Sprint 8. Instead we utilize inexpensive and readily available multipurpose notebook and handheld computers running our custom Race Timer software. This software turns standard computers into powerful feature rich accurate timing equipment.

Shown here is our Race Timer software running on a contemporary Dell Inspiron notebook computer utilizing a wireless network connection to our results processing computers. This computer has two battery bays and will run for over 4 hours without need of recharging or AC power. Our Race Timer software allows for starting the computer after the actual start of the Race. For example you can start the computer 2 hours into a marathon and time for 4 hours supporting timing marathons up to 6 hours or even longer by switching batteries during the event.

This picture shows our Race Timer software running on a 15 year old notebook computer requiring manual transfer of timing data using a floppy disk. Computers like this are very inexpensive and when combined with our Race Timer software present a timing solution at a small fraction of the cost of a Time Machine or Sprint 8. In addition, unskilled volunteers find them easy to work because they utilizing the familiar MS Windows interface. Another advantage besides cost of old computers like this one, is that their screen remains visible outdoors in bright sunlight. This particular computer has been modified by adding a pickle switch to facilitate dual timing. Two people operate the computer. One uses the pickle switch timing every participant. The second uses the keyboard and does select timing, recording a time with a bib number for as many participants as possible.

Our Race Timer software also runs on the Pocket PC. This picture shows a Dell Axim with built in wireless networking capabilities. Depending upon the model, some Pocket PCs will run for 24 hours without need for recharging. This allows for timing ultra marathons without turning the device off. The software is designed for ease of use with large buttons that you can tap with the stylus or your finger. The button layout is configurable to the 10-key layout or a phone key layout.
